Melissa Gatter is a PhD candidate in Middle Eastern Studies at the University of Cambridge. Her current work explores the aspect of time, waiting, and bureaucracy in Azraq refugee camp for Syrian refugees in Jordan, where she conducted fieldwork in 2017-18. Melissa completed her MPhil at Cambridge in 2016, focusing on notions of childhood, humanitarian politics, and Syrianness in Za’tari refugee camp. Broadly, her ethnographic research has analyzed interactions between aid workers and refugees as a focal point for discussion on refugee identity and agency in temporary spaces. Melissa has a BA from the University of Chicago.
