Manuscript formatting is the way in which the content of your research paper is presented. Formatting your manuscript according to journal guidelines involves using correct fonts, margins, page numbers, and headings/sub-headings for your sections. Research papers are expected to be formatted a certain way by journals and publishers. These guidelines are often journal-specific and can be found under the “Author Guidelines” section on the journal website. Papers that do not adhere to these standard guidelines are more likely to be rejected without review. So, make sure that all journal formatting guidelines are satisfied correctly before submitting your manuscript.
What are the Benefits of Manuscript Formatting?
Faster publication
Research papers are sent for peer review ONLY after they are formatted correctly. If your paper does not satisfy the journal’s formatting guidelines, you will be asked to make changes. This can delay the process unnecessarily. If your research paper is correctly formatted in the first submission itself, it can save you valuable time because it will be directly sent for peer review without any reformatting
Easy peer review
With a well-formatted manuscript, you can avoid receiving negative comments from a peer reviewer on the presentation of your research. For instance, if the word count or page limit stipulated by the target journal is satisfied, peer reviewers are less likely to comment on excessive section lengths. Also, reviewers will not be distracted by technicalities and will focus on the scientific content of your work
Enhanced readability
Proper manuscript formatting ensures logically structured research. This not only shows professionalism, but also helps editors and reviewers assess your work more efficiently. Even the readers can easily understand your research if the purpose, findings, and conclusions are presented under clear section headings and organized in paragraphs
What is the Format of a Manuscript Title Page?
Some journals ask you to provide a separate title page during submission. Typically, the title page includes the following elements:
Title of your manuscript
A running title (optional)
Author names and affiliation
Corresponding author information
Word count (optional)
Acknowledgement or funding details
Frequently Asked Questions
- 01
Do you format manuscripts for journal submissions?
We format research papers for journal submission. You can request manuscript formatting using the online submission form and insert the URL of the journal you are submitting your article so that our editors can make sure that your submission fulfills all the journal's article formatting requirements. - 02
How can I share my manuscript or research paper with you so that it can get formatted?
We have a secure online submission system in place for you to upload documents. If you have a document ready for formatting, you can choose the Manuscript formatting services and upload it directly. - 03
What file format should I submit when requesting formatting?
Currently, only Microsoft Word files are supported. Please note that PDF and Latex files are not supported. - 04
If the journal guidelines mention a word count limit, do you reduce the word count to reflect this?
Word reduction is not included in the scope of this service. If you wish to reduce the word count of your paper or abstract, you can do so through the Editage Editing Services. - 05
Why does my formatted paper look different from papers published in the target journal?
We format the manuscript according to the journal submission guidelines. After the journal accepts the paper, the journal will make several typesetting and other formatting related changes; therefore, the final format of the published paper may differ from the format of the submitted manuscript. At the submission stage, journals only expect and require that authors apply the formatting guidelines provided by the journal. We only refer to sample papers or published papers on the journal website when journal guidelines ask authors to do so for the purpose of complying with the journal's guidelines. - 06
Can you format my thesis?
Yes, we can. If your university/institution guidelines are in English or if standard style guides like APA format can be applied to the thesis, we can format it for you. - 07
What separate files will you create for me within this formatting service?
If required by the journal, we will move sections such as the title page, figures, and tables to separate files. However, this service does not include the creation of separate abbreviation lists, highlights, cover letters, or reporting guideline checklists. Additional files required by the journal, like graphical abstracts, cover letter, etc., can be requested separately and will be chargeable. - 08
If I use this journal formatting service, will my paper be considered ready for journal submission?
Please refer to the comments left in the paper by the publication expert before submitting to the journal. The expert will highlight any additional requirements that might need to be met before submission. - 09
What is the difference between manuscript formatting and editing?
Our formatters ensure your manuscript follows journal guidelines for layout, fonts, spacing, citations, headings, and more, but do not correct grammar or language in the paper. - 10
Are figures or measurement units also included in the formatting?
Changes to measurement units, number styles, gene name/symbol notation, table size/resolution, etc. are not included in the scope of this service. Please contact your customer service manager for these requirements, and they will direct you to the correct Editage service to meet your needs. - 11
How can I get free manuscript formatting under Multi-round Formatting Service?
Under Multi-journal formatting plan, you can get unlimited free formatting for 365 days from the date of purchase of the plan. The formatting will only be applicable on the same manuscript, i.e., if you submit a different paper under the plan, it will be charged as a new job. - 12
Can you format references that have been processed using EndNote software?
Currently, this service only supports the manual formatting of references and does not support the formatting of reference lists made using EndNote software. - 13
Will you add subheadings to my abstract if needed by the journal?
The addition of subheadings to the abstract or the division of the abstract into sections requires content knowledge. Hence, our formatting experts will not be able to do this. They will highlight such a journal requirement to you through an appropriate comment. - 14
