Q: What does the status “under consideration” mean?
I submitted a revised manuscript, but the status has not been changed from “under consideration” for 1 month. At the first submission, the status has been updated at each step (ex. “with referees”), so I’m worried about the unchanged status of this resubmission. What does this “under consideration” mean?
Thank you for your question. Once a paper is submitted to a journal, it is assigned to a handling editor who conducts an initial screening of the paper to see if it meets the basic requirements and scope of the journal. If the manuscript does not meet the basic requirements of the journal it will be sent back to the authors for revision. If it does not be meet the scope of the journal it will be desk rejected, within the first few days.
However, if the status has been showing “under consideration” for a long time, it means that it has passed the initial screening and the editor is trying to find peer reviewers for the paper. Once the reviewers are finalized the manuscript will then be sent for peer review, which can be take about 2-3 months to complete.
Hope that helps! We also have a few related resources, including a useful handbook curated by our sister brand, R Upskill.
