The 2014 Shaw Prize
The prestigious Shaw Prize winners will be announced May 27th, 2014.
The Shaw Prize is an esteemed international award dedicated to further progress in the society, enhance quality of life, and enrich humanity’s spiritual civilization. Administered and managed by the Hong Kong-based Shaw Prize Foundation, its selection committees and Board of Adjudicators are formed of internationally renowned scholars (see a clickable chart for appointed members). The Prize is noted for recognizing excellence early on; for instance, six of the Nobel laureates were previously Shaw Prize laureates.
Each September, selections of candidates are received from invited nominators all over the world nominating those currently active in their field, have achieved recent significant advances, and made outstanding contributions. Nominations are reviewed by the respective selection committees and then recommended to the Board of Adjudicators. Results are announced in the following summer.
Recipients of the Prize receive one million US dollars, a certificate, and a medal bearing a quote from the Chinese Confucian philosopher Xun Zi (313 – 238 B.C.) The imprint reads "制天命而用之" meaning "Grasp the law of nature and make use of it."
This year’s Shaw Prize will be especially noteworthy because it will be the first ceremony of the annual award to be held since the passing of its founder Mr. Run Run Shaw in January 7, 2014. Shaw lived to see a decade of scholars awarded by the Prize in its three categories: Astronomy, Life Sciences and Medicine, and Mathematical Sciences.
Be sure to look out for the 2014 Shaw Prize announcement!
