Safeguarding our forests: A call to future generations

The International Day of Forests this year (March 21st, 2025) is focusing on the theme: "Forests and  Foods."

blog posted by the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs summarizes role of forests in addressing hunger and shielding populations from the adverse effects of natural disaster and climate change.

The recent devastating California wildfires reminded us that preserving nature needs the active involvement of citizens in environmental planning and management. As we celebrate the International Day of Forests, it is crucial to recognize the role future generations must play in preserving these vital ecosystems.

What can we do?

  1. Education: This is step one - after all, education is an investment into the future.

  2. Awareness: Governments and citizens together can cooperate to enhance awareness about the importance of conserving forests and reforestation.

  3. Action: Active participation in community planning, resource management, policy decisions and fact-based communication are some examples of how people can actively participate in a greener and healthier future.

The International Day of Forests, observed annually on 21 March is led by the UN Forum on Forests Secretariat, UN DESA, and FAO to raise awareness and promote sustainable management, conservation and sustainable development of all forests and trees for present and future generations.

UN DESA: "This year’s International Day of Forests reminds us that forests and food are deeply interconnected."

Keep up the efforts and join the conversation with #ForestDay to participate in supporting sustainable forests now and into the future!
