Q: How do I write an inquiry to the editor about a delay in the decision on a revised manuscript?
Through Elsevier’s online system, I responded to the journal’s minor revision request. After one day, the status changed to 'With Editor.' Then, after two weeks, the status changed to 'Under Review,' and it was like this for 50 days. After that, the status date changed, but the status has remained unchanged (i.e. ‘Under Review’) till now. What should I do? I need the decision for the graduation.
It is great that you are keeping such a close watch on the progress of your manuscript. I understand your eagerness, especially as you need the decision (of a possible acceptance) for your graduation. On the journal’s side, the manuscript does seem to be progressing, though perhaps not at the pace at which you would like. Do note that journal editors have a lot of manuscripts (at various stages of review and publication) and mails to go through on a regular basis.
Coming to your manuscript, ‘Under Review’ means that it was assigned to a peer reviewer. As it was in this status for 50 days, it is likely that although it was assigned for peer review, the peer reviewer(s) may not have picked it up for review then. When the status date changed recently, the reviewer(s) may have picked it up but perhaps not have completed or even commenced the review. However, 50 days does seem a considerable amount of time for the peer review of a minor revision manuscript. But do note too that peer reviewers are quite busy too.
So, it is quite reasonable to write to the editor requesting an update on the manuscript. As you have done here, you can share how keenly you have been tracking its progress. You could also share (again, like you did here) that you need the decision for your graduation. The editor should be able to understand your need and provide an update. Your manner and tone can be the same as here, though of course, you would know not to push them too much. All the best!
