Editage Travel Grant winners at ISMTE 2017: Experience of three Asian journal editors
In June, 2017, Editage announced travel grants for journal editors from Asia to attend the International Society of Managing and Technical Editors (ISMTE) conference. The three winning Asian journal editors who attended the ISMTE conference in London, UK, are:
- Shanshan Xie from Genomics, Proteomics & Bioinformatics, China
- Suk-Gyeong Kim, Managing Editor, Journal of Astronomy and Space Sciences, Korea
- Pravin Chhetri, Managing Editor, Birat Journal of Health Sciences, Nepal
Michael Willis, President, ISMTE felicitated the winners of the Editage Travel Grants from journals in China, South Korea, and Nepal during the conference. Moreover, Nikesh Gosalia, Director, Academic and Publisher Relations, Editage, guided the editors throughout the conference and helped them make the most of the opportunity. All the three editors found the experience enriching. Here is what they have to say.
On her conference experience, Shanshan Xie from Genomics, Proteomics & Bioinformatics, an official open access journal of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), said, “This is the first time that I’ve attended an international journal editors' conference abroad. I learnt a lot at the conference, made international connections, exchanged ideas, and will certainly bring back best practices that can be implemented at my own journal in China.”
Academics hailing from countries that have tight science budgets find it difficult to network with their global counterparts. Expressing this, Pravin Chhetri, Managing Editor, Birat Journal of Health Sciences from Nepal, said, “ISMTE's European conference was a remarkable experience for me, particularly because the country I belong to offers few opportunities like this. If it wasn’t for the ISMTE and Editage travel grant, I would have never imagined attending this conference."
Sharing his learnings from the conference, Pravin stated, "The conference helped me gain insights about recent developments in scientific publication." He further added that, "ISMTE and Editage have provided a wonderful opportunity for Managing Editors across Asia by providing this travel grant. I request every Managing Editor from Asia to apply for such grants in the future.”
Suk-Gyeong Kim, Managing Editor, Journal of Astronomy and Space Sciences published by the Korean Space Science Society, was thrilled at the opportunity of attending the ISMTE conference. She said, “As a managing editor, making connections & networking with international colleagues is essential. But it is almost impossible for me to attend international conferences such as ISMTE in my own personal budget. So, I have been attending only domestic conferences, but those are limited to the Asia-Pacific area and offer limited exposure. So this ISMTE European conference was the first and real ‘international’ one for me.
"All of the presentations and discussions were valuable to me and I was so happy with the fact that I could attend this conference," said Suk-Gyeong about the conference proceedings. She added that, "Mr. Nikesh Gosalia of Editage acted as a great bridge between the European attendees and grant winners from Asia.”
The Editage team takes pleasure in enabling these editors to attend the ISMTE conference. Clarinda Cerejo, Editor-in-Chief, Editage Insights, expressed her joy by saying, “These grants have been great in connecting journal editors from Asia with their international counterparts. Our in-depth author survey, which is closing on December 20, is another initiative that will bridge gaps between authors and publishers.”
