Anna Boegehold is a post-doctoral research fellow in Detroit where she is interested in investigating how contaminants of concern in urban areas can affect reproduction, development, and gene expression. She completed her PhD in biology in June 2018. Her dissertation research focused on the interaction between cyanobacteria blooms and invasive quagga mussels, specifically how cyanobacteria impact quagga mussel reproduction, development, and physiology. Anna is interested in using her scientific skills to study how environmental contaminants impact public health. She is particularly interested in how environmental degradation impacts marginalized and underrepresented populations in urban areas, such as Detroit. Anna has been involved in many local environmental non-profit groups and loves to volunteer teaching K-12 students about Great Lakes ecosystems. She is also an avid mentor and advocate for increasing diversity and inclusivity in STEM. When she’s not busy in the lab and field, she likes to cook, play video games and Dungeons and Dragons, watch horror movies, be outside, and spend time with friends and family. She also has two precious cats, Marge and Popcorn. Follow her on Twitter @anna_boeg
