Premise: In city Y, neighborhood X has the highest number of households with pet dogs.
Conclusion: The likelihood of robberies in neighborhood X is lower than that in other neighborhoods in city Y.
In research that relies on hypotheses, deductive reasoning is applied. For you to predict results by extrapolating from general principles, these very general principles or premises must be valid. For example, scientists may predict that if the climate becomes warmer in a particular region, the flowering patterns of a species will change. These predictions are made and tested, and these “changes” have been found to hold true.
Inductive vs deductive reasoning
Inductive reasoning moves from specific observations to broader generalizations and theories. It makes inferences from a limited set of specific facts or data points. With the inductive approach, a researcher begins by collecting data. Next, the data are analyzed for patterns, on the basis of which a theory is developed to explain the patterns. Thus, the move is from data to theory, i.e., from specific to general.
Researchers using a deductive approach will study existing theories of the phenomenon of interest and then test the hypotheses emerging from those theories. Deductive reasoning, in contrast with inductive reasoning, starts with general premises or facts and moves towards a conclusion through valid logic. Thus, the move is from general to specific.
Both forms of reasoning have important roles in the research process. Inductive reasoning is used to develop new theories and hypotheses. Deductive reasoning is then used to test those theories through predicted logical consequences.
