Calling Climate Champions: Apply for Google’s Carbon Removal Research Awards

Global climate has transformed dramatically from the pre-industrial era, and these alterations are affecting living organisms and ecosystems, as well as human activities and welfare. According to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change,1 limiting global warming to 1.5°C is vital for reducing the probability of extreme weather events and for securing a viable future for all. So far, efforts and plans have not been enough to combat this challenge of limiting global warming. However, large-scale carbon removal is gaining increasing attention as a critical part of climate change mitigation strategies.

Google has announced the Carbon Removal Research Awards to sponsor academic research targeting carbon removal. The awards will support research programs aimed at solving critical issues related to carbon removal and will help advance the development of the carbon removal sector. By encouraging academic research into carbon removal, Google is taking an active role in the fight against climate change and empowering researchers to hasten the transition to a more sustainable future. The awards will provide much needed impetus to the development of carbon removal technologies, such as direct air capture (e.g., “blue carbon” technologies), reforestation and afforestation, organic matter sinking, and enhanced weathering.

Google’s Carbon Removal Research Awards are a great opportunity for boosting research in the urgent area of innovative and efficient approaches for carbon removal. Google is seeking proposals with potential for significant and positive change from the global academic research community. The Awards will support up to three PhD students or equivalent support (i.e., post-doctoral researchers) for up to three years.

The awards will be an excellent opportunity to drive research that addresses some of the most significant challenges facing our planet today. Climate researchers interested in submitting proposals can learn more about Google’s Carbon Removal Research Awards here. The deadline for submissions is April 28, 2023.
