Mary McMillan

Lecturer in Biomedical Science

Bio

Mary is a self-confessed science nerd and mother, who is passionate about teaching and communicating science. As a researcher, she works with a multi-disciplinary research group on projects to increase understanding of the biology and physiology of mental health disorders, with a major focus on depression and autism spectrum disorder. As a science communicator Mary is often found running outreach activities for school and community groups, and pens a regular science column for regional newspapers across Australia. Coming from a rural background herself, Mary is keen to encourage country kids, especially girls, to explore careers in STEM, and is an enthusiastic advocate for women in STEM. Outside of work you’ll find Mary at her local Parkrun, or catching the latest Marvel movie, or somewhere with her nose buried in a good book.Subject matter expertise: Molecular biology, human genetics, biomarkers, science communication
