Q: Are the title page and authors' contributions included in the manuscript word limit?
For the word limit of the manuscript, the Author Guidelines only state ‘4,500 words (all inclusive).’ I assume that it should include the abstract, body [sections], references, and figure legends, but I’m not sure whether the title page and authors’ contributions should be counted. At the time of submission, figures and tables are to be sent in separate files as attachments.
For most journals, the title page and authors’ contributions are not included in the word limit. Actually, even the abstract and references are not considered, but this could differ across journals. Some journals do specify what’s included, but for those that do not, you should try not to exceed the word limit too much. In the first draft, you should concentrate on getting your points in place. Later, you can always edit out some words or text to fit it within the word limit. In case you believe the word limit might become an issue, you may consider using an editing service to help here. Note that most journals allow a little bit of leeway, at least with the first draft and especially if they are solely online. In case of a print version, space is an issue. So, you might need to take greater care there.
Now, if you are just a bit over the limit and this is a matter of concern, when submitting the manuscript, you could mention in the cover letter that you’ve done your best to stay within the limit and are exceeding it only by a bit.
