It is clear that individual differences – in perspectives, experiences, or situations – influence the way we perceive things. Using this thought to look at the research publication process, let’s focus on how peer review is perceived by authors, reviewers, and editors. In this panel discussion, the speakers will share their thoughts on 

• How peer review is viewed and experienced differently by different stakeholders 

• How personal experiences and aspirations shape the understanding of the peer review process 

• What authors, reviewers, and editors expect from peer review and how they would like it to improve or evolve in the future

Speakers

Sun Huh 

M.D., Ph.D. - Professor, Department of Parasitology, College of Medicine, Hallym University, Chuncheon, Korea; President, Korean Council of Science Editors 

Dr. Sun Huh is a tenure-track professor at the Department of Parasitology, College of Medicine, at Hallym University, Chuncheon, Korea. Since 2005, he has been an editor at the Journal of Educational Evaluation for Health Professions. Dr. Huh is also the President of the Korean Council of Science Editors, and President, Korean Association of Medical Journal Editors. 

Karishma Kaushik  

Assistant Professor/Ramalingaswami Re-entry Fellow, Department of Biotechnology, Savitribai Phule Pune University, India 

Dr. Karishma Kaushik is a recipient of the Ramalingaswami Re-entry Fellowship from the Department of Biotechnology (DBT), Government of India. After completing her MD in Clinical Microbiology from the Armed Forces Medical College, Pune in India in 2008, Dr. Kaushik went on to pursue a PhD in Molecular Genetics and Microbiology from the University of Texas in Austin, USA, where she investigated novel strategies to overcome antibiotic resistance in bacterial populations. After spending over a decade in the US, Dr. Kaushik chose to return to India to activate her re-entry fellowship and start a lab of her own. Her aim was to make the most of her knowledge as a medical doctor and training as a scientist. She currently leads the Human-Relevant Infection Biology Group (at the Institute of Bioinformatics and Biotechnology, Savitribai Phule Pune University/University of Pune), that studies complex infection states, with a focus on chronic wounds and biofilms in order to help develop composite, precision-based infection therapeutics. She is a recipient of multiple awards, has several publications to her credit, and has considerable teaching experience. Dr. Kaushik is passionate about bridging the gap between academic research and the bedside, and aims to be a part of developing India’s first MD/PhD program, which would encompass clinical training such as hospital and laboratory training in basic science skill sets such as discovery-based research, grant writing, scientific writing and publishing, leading to a composite physician-scientist. 

Thomas Agbaedeng  

Novo Nordisk Research Fellow at the University of Oxford 

Dr. Thomas Agbaedeng is Novo Nordisk Research Fellow at the University of Oxford. Before this he was an Emerging Leaders and Postdoctoral Fellow at Adelaide Medical School, The University of Adelaide, Australia. He investigates the drivers of cardiometabolic disease and novel biomarkers for risk predictions. Dr. Agbaedeng completed his PhD in 2019, studying the development of heart rhythm disorders in obesity, with further training at the Department of Experimental Cardiology, Amsterdam UMC, Amsterdam (2020). Dr Agbaedeng won 1st Prize at the Young Investigator Award competition, European Heart Rhythm Association Congress, Barcelona, among others, and competitive grants from the National Heart Foundation of Australia (2020) and The University of Adelaide (2021). As an emerging mentor and teacher, his students have graduated with distinction and won research scholarships. He has co-authored dozens of scholarly papers and peer-reviewed >100 papers for high-impact journals, such as European Heart Journal, Heart Rhythm, and Frontiers in Cardiovascular Medicine. As a committed advocate for early-career investigators (ECIs), Dr. Agbaedeng co-founded the International Society for Heart Research Australasia Section ECI Committee in 2020. 

Sneha Kulkarni

Sneha Kulkarni is Editor-in-Chief of Editage Insights, a multilingual global platform designed for researchers and scholarly publishing professionals. Sneha focuses on providing resources and tools to researchers to help them in their academic publishing journey. She writes original discussion and comment articles that provide researchers and publishers a platform to voice their opinion. Sneha has written guest posts for The Scholarly Kitchen, LSE Impact blog, and Wiley’s blog among others. She’s been a Peer Review Week steering committee member since 2021. In her free time, Sneha loves to bake, read books, watch cooking shows, and plan her next vacation.
